Since 1999, Philomène Longpré has created multisensory experiences where the visitor, through their presence, is engaged in the artistic writing of the works. She is dedicated to developing responsive art systems that translate body language while exploring the interaction between the physical and virtual worlds. Holding a master’s in arts and technology from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008) and a doctorate in arts practice from Concordia University (2013), Longpré continued her research at the DXARTS Center of the University of Washington as well as at the University of New Mexico. She develops a transdisciplinary practice that integrates fine arts, performance art, anthropology of the senses, as well as computer and mechanical engineering.
Her works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including Illusio, at the EXIT and VIA Festival in France; Octopus, at the FILE Electronic Art Festival in Brazil and AIR Hong Kong Arts Centre in Hong Kong; Passage, at BUDI in South Korea, the Thailand New Media Art Festival, and Di Cupramontana in Italy; Cereus, Queen of the Night, at the PHI Centre as part of the Elektra Festival in Montreal; Formica, at C-2 Mtl and the BIAN Biennial of digital arts in Montreal and Collider festivals, United States; and Telematic Exchange, at the Looptopia a in the United States and at Hong Kong Art Institute.
In addition, her works from 1998 to 2017 were the subject of a monograph titled TRANSCENDARE, which includes texts by Kate Mondloch, Florence de Mèredieu, David Howes, Alison Syme, Isa Tousignant, and Christine Redfern.
Longpré was a professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the DXARTS Center at the University of Washington. In 2019, she was invited as a full-time professor into the artist-in-residence program in the IMCA(Intermedia), visual art department of Concordia University.
Currently, she directs collaborative research projects on sensory manifestations evoked within the framework of sculptural installations and performance art. In addition, in recent years, she has worked on the creation of eco-responsible art systems. Longpré presents robotic art projects made from biodegradable materials and recycled mechanisms. These projects follow her works, Envolée Lyrique (2021), a large-scale installation, recently created for Studio Telus at the Grand Théâtre de Québec, as well as Magnificence Ailée (2024) at the Maison de la Culture Claude-Léveillée.
